The enemy likes to attack, when your guard is down. Remember watching a movie when a group of men are trying to break through the forces of the enemy's gate to save some of their captured soldiers. Think how often the enemy is playing cards, drinking, laughing and having fun. Then all of the sudden after a grenade goes off, or an explosion they all run to get dressed and search for their guns. The problem with not being armed, vigilant and prepared is once the explosion happens, damage is done.
Many Christians are out of balance. They spend all of their time having "fun", and when the enemy shoots a fiery dart (explosion), they run for their shield of faith, but the damage is done. There is nothing wrong with having fun or entertainment, but when we are out of balance, spending more time in entertainment then we are spending with God, we are headed for serious trouble.
It is when we are distracted the most that the enemy can hurt us the most. We are told to be sober be vigilant because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about, seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5; 8). We are not to be in fear of the devil, but to be watchful, there is a difference. When we are fearful we will attract what we fear. Instead verse nine tells us to... Resist steadfast in the faith. Faith believes what God has said and what he has said about you. This means we need to be in faith all the time, so the enemy cannot penetrate our shield and cause any damage.
Yesterday's faith cannot carry you today. Many Christians make this mistake; they try to live off of yesterday's faith. Faith is now. It has nothing to do with what your faith level has been at. What you believed yesterday does not mean you'll be totally convinced of the same thing two months from now. Two months from now, if you have not consistently been in the word, hearing the word, spending time with the word of God, it may not be in abundance in your heart. Now when faced with a bleak situation, you may choose to believe the situation instead of what God has said about you.
This is when the enemy wants to lodge his attack. When you have been distracted with--what shall you eat, drink, what clothing you should wear, relationships, entertainment, and money. But when we seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness all these things will be added on to us. Why? Because our loving father knows that we have need of these things.
When we put the king and the kingdom first we are well balanced and we can freely enjoy all things that our father has for us. When we allow other things to consume our time (thoughts) we are headed for some turbulence (turmoil). But with God first we will enjoy his inner peace, joy, strength and loving grace in our time of need.
To have that balance that is necessary to enjoy life to it’s fullest we must include God in our affairs. To invite the King's presence we must be humble, seeking, acknowledging, obeying and loving Him. By making quiet time to listen to God we will hear Him. God's desire is that we move closer to Him and become one with Him. Then you can make our boast with full confidence (faith) knowing and saying that the Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked even my enemies and my foes, came upon me to keep up my flesh, they stumbled and fell. And if God be for me, who can be against me?
Having this type of mindset is what equips us with the God kind of faith that will cause us to succeed in all of our endeavors. We are automatically prepared to thwart any attack of the enemy because we are full of God’s word. Instead now we can go into the enemy’s camp and do the damage. Knowing that every place our feet shall tread we will posses the land!
