Yesterday, this week, last week, last month, last year or years ago, is the amount of time we hold on to things people have done to us. They could have said, done, possibly even wrote something we did not agree with. Within that incident, we harbor bitterness and un-forgiveness towards them. Although the situation has come and gone, we keep it alive by us holding onto it. Then it creeps into our attitude towards that person and possibly to others we know or have the same characteristics as our offender.
Holding on to ill-feelings and hurt gives that person/situation authority over us; no one deserves that power but The Almighty. However living past them allows us to live in the liberty God has given us. Praying and forgiving loosens their power and activates God’s strength to cause the bitter heart to rejoice again! The stronger person, the Christian must love them despite what they did. Release the past authority and live in liberty. Give em' grace!
“In prayer there is a connection between what God does and what you do. You can't get forgiveness from God, for instance, without also forgiving others. If you refuse to do your part, you cut yourself off from God's part.” Matthew 6: 14-15 (The Message)
